03/11/2010 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The third-seeded and seventh-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers begin their march towards a Big East Tournament title tonight, as they face off against the 11th-seeded Cincinnati Bearcats in the quarterfinals at Madison Square Garden. The team that comes out on top will move to the semifinals against Notre Dame or Pittsburgh.
The Mountaineers won a school-record 13 Big East games this season, including a triumph over Villanova in their finale to help secure a second-place finish. WVU was one of three teams to finish in second and after the tie-breakers, the program earned the third seed and a double-bye for this tourney. The Mountaineers have posted eight victories in their last 13 Big East Tournament games, reaching the semifinals in each of the past two events.
As for the Bearcats, they had been 0-3 in the Big East Tournament prior to this season and didn't appear as if they would make any noise after losing their last three games of the regular campaign. Cincinnati though, showed its resiliency by nipping 14th-seeded Rutgers, 69-68, in the first round before knocking off the defending champions and sixth-seeded Louisville, 69-66, last night. The Bearcats, who are the only team to win two games in this year's event so far, have enough quality wins that just reaching the finals of the tourney could land them a spot in the Big Dance.
Cincinnati leads the all-time series with WVU, 10-7, but the Mountaineers took a 74-68 decision back on February 27th.
The Bearcats' Deonta Vaughn hit two free throws with 5.9 seconds remaining before coming up with a game-saving strip in the closing moments of a 69-66 upset of Louisville last night. Vaughn finished the night with 10 points and two steals for the Cincinnati, which dominated the boards, 54-33, for the second night in a row. Yancy Gates led the way with 16 points, and Lance Stephenson tacked on 12 points and three steals. Stephenson, the Big East Freshman of the Year, made the game-winning free-throw in the first round win over Rutgers and he paces the squad with 12.0 ppg for the season. Vaughn adds 11.1 ppg and a team-high 3.4 apg, while Gates puts forth 10.7 ppg and 6.0 rpg.
The Mountaineers are a sound group, and they are outscoring opponents by 9.9 ppg and outrebounding them by 6.6 rpg. Da'Sean Butler tops the roster in scoring at 17.2 ppg and the first-team All-Big East selection also turns in 6.3 rpg and 3.3 apg. Kevin Jones ranks second on the team with 13.5 ppg and 7.4 rpg, while Devin Ebanks adds 12.4 ppg. Ebanks, a third-team all-conference pick, also rips down 8.3 rpg to pace WVU in that department. Darryl Bryan is another option and he checks in with 10.6 ppg and 3.3 apg.

Mayweather picked to beat De La Hoya
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -- Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya and his rival Floyd Mayweather Jr. arrived at the MGM Grand here Wednesday amid the pomp and pandemonium befitting two of the biggest stars in the sport who are about to duke it out for the WBC super welterweight crown this Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
As of Wednesday, MySportsbook.com closed its book with Mayweather a favorite to defeat De La Hoya at -170 (a $100 bet wins $70), while De La Hoya is a +140 underdog (a $100 bet wins $140).
Mayweather arrived at about 11:30 a.m. on a big truck with his face and a big "World's Best Pound-for-Pound" sign scribbled across the vehicle. He was accompanied by his entourage made up of rappers and his training team.
A crowd of close to 3,000 eager fans packed the MGM Grand lobby, with their cameras in tow, all trying to vie for position to get a good angle at Mayweather, who is acknowledged as the world's best fighter pound-for-pound.
Eric Gomez, Golden Boy Promotions vice-president, described the fan turnout as "amazing" and swore he had never seen anything quite like this event.
"The crowd was fantastic. Everybody was just too eager to see the two fighters," said ALA manager Michael Aldeguer, who was among those who waited at the lobby together with his ward Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista and AJ Banal.
De La Hoya made his own grand entrance at the hotel lobby at around 12:30 p.m. accompanied by GBP chief executive officer Richard Schaefer and trainer Freddie Roach.
The same group of fans who trooped to see Mayweather also lingered around to get a close look at De La Hoya, who has been secretly working out at a Las Vegas gym for days after arriving from his main training camp in Puerto Rico.
The golden boy then took part in a closed-door afternoon workout with Bautista and Banal. The two, along with Aldeguer and wife Christine, as well as an HBO crew were the only ones allowed inside the gym.
De La Hoya and Mayweather take part in today's final press conference before the official weigh-in this Friday.
Ring Magazine, the acknowledged bible of boxing, reported in its June 2007 issue that 12 out of 20 boxing experts it interviewed have favored Mayweather to defeat De la Hoya, with only 8 favoring the latter.
But Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao said in a recent interview with The Freeman's Emmanuel Villaruel that De La Hoya will win by unanimous decision over Mayweather.
